Branding Your Facebook Page With a Vertical Image

We recently created a Facebook page for PartsLogix and were looking to get a skyskraper type banner along the left edge, much like you’ve probably seen from big companies like Victoria’s Secret, McDonalds, Red Bull, etc. Upon first uploading our tall image, we got the following message:

Your picture is too tall or too wide.
Try to pick something closer to a square.

Upon doing a little searching on Google, I found that not only does Facebook limit the upload size to 4MB, but they also limit the

dimensions of the images that can be uploaded (how to upload a vertical image to facebook). Limiting the dimensions makes sense because all images are

displayed as square thumbnails anyways – except when you’re viewing the full size image. The magic ratio is 3:1. Once your image aspect ratio exceeds 3:1, Facebook will refuse the upload. We ended up uploading an image that was 200 x 600 pixels

and that’s what you currently see on our Facebook page.

Here are some other standard dimensions for vertical Facebook profile pictures:

• 200 x 600
• 180 x 540
• 200 x 400
• 200 x 200

Obviously the last image isn’t a vertical image, its a square. There are some benefits to using square images when choosing your Facebook

profile. This little screenshot below should give you an idea why.
